I am so saddened by the loss of John Putnam. We did not know each other, however we shared a common thread, Hawaii. The love he showed and played every Saturday morning was what I looked forward to. I left my heart in Hawaii 4 yrs ago. I plan to return there to reside and stay. I will throw a beautiful lei in the ocean for dear, sweet John when I do return to the islands. I no longer live in Tucson, but I connected most Saturday mornings via the internet with John's radio show, Mele O Hawai'i, on KXCI. Johns' passion for the music of Hawaii brought me joy, excitement, feelings of peace. I loved learning more about the culture and music of Hawaii and hearing him "talk story." His passing leaves a little hole in my soul.
I knew John for about 15 years through our association with KXCI. He shared lots about Hawaiian music and culture, his Hawaiian shirts, politics, and cooking and gardening tips. He could be so kind and so completely exasperating. We ate breakfast at the Cup Cafe twice a month on Saturdays after his radio show and before mine. He always had the quiche with cholula green sauce, fresh cracked pepper on the greens, black coffee, and water no ice. We probably had 75 breakfasts together. I will miss my friend. Aloha and mahalo.

We can’t say that we really knew John, having met and talked with him only a few times at KXCI functions. However, for the past decade we have started almost every Saturday morning with a cup of coffee while listening to Mele O Hawaii. It is something of a tradition now for us, and I wanted you to know how much pleasure John gave us over the years with his wonderful music selections. We will miss him, and I suspect that E Komo Mai will always be first on our Saturday morning playlist.
