May 30, 1943 - May 11, 2020
Marge Christensen Gould, 76, of Balboa, PCZ, passed away peacefully at her home in Tucson, Arizona on May 11, 2020. Marge was a 30+ year resident of Tucson. Her father, Joseph Watson worked for the US Navy in the Panama Canal Zone, and her husband David Christensen was a US Naval Seaman stationed there as well. Marge and David spent many years in Beverly, Massachusetts with their children, Karen and Kim, before moving to Tucson in 1986. Marge was a teacher for more than 40 years at the Junior High and High School levels. She taught English and Literacy Skills at Catalina Magnet High School in Tucson from 1986-2013. Working with immigrant and refugee students from all over the world, Marge’s teaching program focused not only on literacy but also on the skills needed to prepare students for the 21st century workplace. Her annual “Celebrate Literacy Evening” events received national attention, awarding students with computers and scholarships. Marge was chosen as the Circle K Southern Arizona Teacher of the Year for 2000-2001, and was named to USA Today’s 2000 All Teacher Team. Marge published two books, “Motivational English for At-Risk Students” and “Developing Literacy & Workplace Skills”. Following David’s passing, Marge met her second husband Herman Gould, optometrist. The two were married for 9 years until Gould’s passing in 2009. Marge and Herman published “Lov-E-Mail”, a collection of loving messages for strong relationships. Marge loved the Arizona desert and the Tucson Mountains. Marge is survived by her brother Russell Watson of Hereford, AZ, her daughters, Karen Christensen-Grubb of Orlando, FL and Kim Christensen Clark of Seattle, WA, and four grandchildren – Joseph and Jenna Christensen, and Charlotte and Anna Clark. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marge’s honor to Literacy Connects (LiteracyConnects.org), a Tucson-based nonprofit that connects people to a world of opportunities through literacy and creative expression. This is a mission that was always near and dear to Marge’s heart. Marge’s family would especially like to thank the Memory Care team at Sunrise Senior Living at 4975 N. 1st Avenue, Tucson, for the loving care they provided to Marge during her last few difficult years. From Lov-E-Mail: “Each new day is better and more wonderful than the day before, because we make it happen”. To ensure the health and safety of our community, we are following all guidelines set by local, state and CDC officials. If you are planning on attending a service, please contact the funeral home in advance, so that we can plan accordingly.
