Judge Alfredo C. Marquez's Obituary
Judge Alfredo C. Marquez passed away August 27, 2014. A native Arizonan, Fred was born in Winkelman to his parents, Fred and Rosario. Originally from Mexico, they migrated to Arizona and became United States citizens. After graduating from Hayden High School, Fred moved to Los Angeles and attended Curtis Wright Tech. located at the Glendale, CA airport and completed the engineering course. In 1941, he joined the U.S. Navy where he became an instrument flight instructor then in advanced flight training. In 1948, Fred earned his degree in Economics from the University of Arizona. Two years later, he received his law degree. Fred was an Assistant Attorney General of Arizona in 1951. In 1952, he was offered a job by then County Attorney Morris K. Udall in Tucson and he became a Deputy County Attorney. In 1955, he was an Administrative Assistant to U.S. Representative Stewart Udall. In 1956, he went on to become a prosecutor for the City of Tucson and, in 1957, he partnered with Lowell Rothschild and John Mesch and formed a law firm which still exists today. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter nominated Fred to a new seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. After being confirmed by the U.S. Senate in June, Fred received his commission on June 30, 1980. Upon assuming senior status, his seat was filled via the appointment of John Roll. Throughout his life, Fred enjoyed playing golf, hunting and camping. He was a devout supporter of his beloved University of Arizona football and basketball teams. Along with family, many sought his counsel and he was always willing to help. Fred will be forever remembered as a man with high integrity and a deep love of family. In 1948, Fred married Georgie (nee Steiner) and had four children, Mark, Sandra, Sharon and Linda (Ken Gullen). They blessed him with 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In August 1974, Fred married Linda (nee Jeffreys) and raised their daughter, Natalie (Ken Fortier). She gifted him with two more grandchildren. Also left to cherish his memories are his beloved Uncle, Randy and sister, Flora along with a host of relatives and friends.
