Anthony "Tony" Emanuel Zavas' Obituary
We celebrate the beautiful life of Anthony Emanuel "Tony" Zavas, a man whose optimism guided every mile of his remarkable journey. Born in Champaign, Illinois, Tony grew up eager to learn and even more eager to explore.
Tony earned an E.M.T. certification at Pima Community College, a Bachelor's in Journalism from the University of Arizona, and a Master's in Special Education from Northern Arizona University. His drive for lifelong learning never slowed.
Fresh out of high school, Tony biked across Europe all the way to Selassia, Greece, honoring the village of his Spartan ancestry. On April 3, 1978 he wrote to this mother, Angela Zerdavis, the following letter " I am in Greece and I just got off the boat. My grandfather did the same in New York a long time ago. My bike shall be my source of transportation," capturing both his courage and his respect for family history.
After his journalism studies, Tony became a photojournalist and traveled through Central America, recording political change and meeting people from every walk of life. Each trip added new stamps to his passport and fresh insight to his growing worldview.
Teaching math and science was his passion. Teaching soon became Tony's favorite adventure. He shared stories, languages, and kindness with middle and high school students in Tucson, Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Monterey, CA. Known as "a compassionate and creative teacher," he inspired countless young minds to see the world with open eyes and open hearts.
Kind, creative, intelligent, honest, and always optimistic, Tony loved nothing more than connecting with people. He cherished his sister Christina Lask, remembered his late uncle Dimitri Zerdavis, and supported Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) whenever he could.
Tony's spirit encourages us to keep moving, keep learning, and greet each day with positive thought. May every ride, lesson, and snapshot he left behind remind us to celebrate life just as fully.
