Bertha Kaplan Segal
89, of Tucson, passed away on April 11, 2015. She was born on May 20, 1925 to Russian immigrant parents in Gouverneur, New York. Bertha is survived by her three children, Dr. Robert Segal (Anne), of Tucson, Barbara Goldberg (Dr. Gerald), of Tucson, Janet Strauss (Leonard) of Leverett, MA; eight grandchildren, Stephen, Brad and Bonnie Segal, Matthew Goldberg (Larissa Chernock) and Julia Goldberg Elitzer (Daniel), Rachel (Tiernan Mennen), Aaron and David Poritz; one great-grandchild, Emmanuelle Mennen; one brother, Albert Kaplan (Vreni) and many other loving family and friends. Bertha and her late husband, Abner Segal were past residents of Canton, NY and Skaneateles, NY before moving to Tucson in 1993. She was a language and speech pathologist for the Canton Public Schools, Skaneateles Pubic Schools and upon her retirement from New York State, Bertha attained her certification and worked for the Ampitheater Public Schools in Tucson as well as at the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. During her tenure that spanned more than forty years, Bertha touched the lives of countless children and adults. Bertha loved the outdoors. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher as well as a docent at the Tohono Chul Park. She was a member of Congregation Anshei Israel. Bertha will be missed by all who knew her and will be remembered for her tenacity to enjoy life, her deep devotion to her family and friends, her amazing cooking, and her appreciation of natural beauty.
