Bruce Miles Whitehouse's Obituary
It is with profound sorrow we bid farewell to Chief Bruce Whitehouse (Ret.) of Corona de Tucson, AZ.
Born November 3, 1953, in Arlington, VA. He left us on September 15, 2023, from Corona de Tucson.
Chief Whitehouse was loved and respected by the Corona de Tucson community. He served with the Corona de Tucson Fire District for 33 years, 26 years as paramedic, and 15 years as Chief. He also led tours as an engine boss, fighting wildland fires throughout the west including Arizona, California, Texas, and Montana.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandy McPherson Whitehouse; daughters Christine (Michael) Bong and Andrea Clark; grandchildren Christine Marie (James) Lenz, Jeffrey (Mollie) Stephens, Samantha Bong, and Amy (Justin) Souza; great-grandchildren Hunter, Miles, and Madsen Lenz, Rosie and June Stephens, Adelaide, Ezra, and Blythe Souza; sister Joan Whitehouse Lovett; cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Captain Wendel Whitehouse, mother Jane (Browne) Whitehouse, son-in-law Jeffrey Clark, brother Steven Whitehouse, and beloved Aunt Jacqueline Whitehouse Archer.
After an illustrious high school career, winning the 1972 Virginia indoor and outdoor high jump championships, he received a track and field scholarship to Virginia Tech. He was inducted into the West Springfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.
He was a dedicated follower of the Grateful Dead having attended far too many shows to count and a civil war scholar. With his dear wife, he traveled the world with his backpacker guitar collecting friends wherever he went.
A memorial will be held in his honor on Monday, September 25, 2023, at 1 PM at Corona de Tucson Fire Station #1, 99 E Tallahassee, Corona de Tucson, AZ. A private family burial will take place on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Evergreen Cemetery, Tucson, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to the Corona de Tucson Fire Department or Save the Santa Ritas.
