Carl Wayne Bellamy's Obituary
Carl Wayne Bellamy
February 5, 1922 – November 27, 2017
Carl Bellamy was born in Linton, Indiana on February 5, 1922 to Addis and Alpha (Eggers) Bellamy. He spent his childhood in Linton, along with his sister Maxine, and many close friends and cousins. His grandpa Granville was his inspiration and very dear to his heart.
Carl excelled in school and referred to himself as a “bookworm”. After high school at the age of 19, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. He completed his basic training at Jackson Barracks, MO before transferring to the U.S. Army Air Corps. He trained at Venice Army Airfield in Venice, FL to become a navigation radar installer at the 3rd Air force Repair Service School. During the war, Carl was assigned to the 482nd Bomb Group (B-17 and B-24 Heavy Bombers) with the 8th Air Force, stationed at RAF Alconbury, England. His duties involved repairs and installation of communication and navigation systems (radio and radar) on the bombers. Alconbury was home to the Radar-Equipped Pathfinder Group (1944-1945).
After the war, Carl moved to California and attended college for 3 years followed by a job as a surveyor with the U.S. Government Boundary Commission working in Arizona and Mexico. In 1952 he began work for Hughes Aircraft in Culver City, CA and remained there for the next 30 years. Carl married his wife, Laura, in 1961, and had three children, Michael, Lydia and Jeffrey. Carl and Laura moved to Tucson in 1989, and after 32 years of marriage, Laura passed away in 1993. They enjoyed traveling all over the world together and had many dear friends. Carl’s passion was gardening and was quite the “social butterfly”. He had a great sense of humor, laughed all the time, and a smile you could never forget.
Carl is survived by his three children, Michael, Lydia and Jeffrey, many grandchildren, and his “adopted Tucson family”, Joe, Susie, Sarah, Kellie and Patrick Sheehan.
