Douglas Wegner's Obituary
Dr. Douglas Wegner, passed away suddenly on Friday, August 5, 2011 doing what he liked to do best, spending time with his children, enjoying the great outdoors while running through Sabino Canyon. Doug was the second of three sons born on August 30, 1957 to Drs Kurt and Margot Wegner. Doug was an extremely intelligent man with a wonderful work ethic. He was born and raised in Youngstown, OH. He graduated from Liberty High School and then went on to obtain a bachelors degree at MIT in mechanical engineering in 1979. He then worked for Fisher Scientific and Westinghouse on nuclear reactors for submarines. Doug, wanting to further his education, worked full-time and went to school at night at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA to obtain a masters degree in engineering in 1993. This was not enough stimulation for Doug. He then decided to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a physician. With his mechanical engineering background, Doug was fascinated by the way things worked and putting everything back together. Orthopedics was Dougs forte. He enjoyed this work immensely. Dr. Wegner received his M.D. degree from Brown University in 1989. He then went on to do his internship and residency at Yale University in orthopedics. After completing his residency, Doug went on to finish a fellowship in hand surgery at Indiana Hand Center. He finished his formal education in 1995. Wanting to stay close to family, Dr Wegner took a faculty surgeon position at University of Kentucky, a Level 1 Trauma Center. Dr. Wegner was also a superb teacher for the medical students, winning the prestigious teacher of the year award during his second year teaching. Doug always had a love for the mountains and skiing. After interviewing in several states, Dr. Wegner took a position at Tucson Orthopedic Institute as a staff hand surgeon. Dougs favorite activities included: skiing, golfing, running, biking and camping. Doug was always happiest spending time with his family and his dogs. He was a wonderful, devoted father. He attended their athletic events and was an avid supporter. Doug was an active board member of the Tanque Verde Little League and could be found at McDonald Park cheering on his boys. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dr. Margot Wegner and mourned by his father, Dr. Kurt Wegner; brothers, Ken (Fern) and Russell (Barbara) Wegner; Ann Pearson and children, Graham, Maxwell and Benjamin Wegner. Doug is missed by family, friends and patients. Service will be held Monday, August 8, 2011, at 12:30 PM, EVERGREEN MORTUARY.
