Dr. Raymond Grossman's Obituary
Dr. Raymond Grossman, loving husband, devoted father, grand and great-grandfather, and dedicated physician passed away peacefully at home on October 17th, 2011 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Dr. Grossman was born on April 18th, 1928 in Newark, New Jersey. Son of Samuel and Molly and brother to Charles and Annette, Raymond spent his youth in New Jersey before enlisting in the Unites States Navy, becoming a Corpsman and achieving the rank of PhM3/c. Inspired to pursue medicine, Raymond returned home after an honorary discharge to complete his undergraduate education, ultimately graduating from Columbia University in 1951. An intrepid soul, Raymond sought to pursue his medical education in Europe, matriculating at the University of Brussels, Brussels, Belgium prior beginning his formal medical education at the University of Zurich, in Zurich, Switzerland. Through the course of his studies he made the acquaintance of Eriva who would become his loving wife of 57 years. After receiving his M.D. in 1958, Dr. Grossman and Eriva left Europe for the United States to begin their family, complete his medical training and engage the practice of medicine. Two souls from far away ultimately landed in the small community of Phoenix, Arizona in 1959. Completing his residency training at St. Joseph's Hospital, they ultimately chose the idyllic community of Douglas, Arizona to begin their family, initiate his medical practice, and raise four children, Claire, James, Robert, and Cynthia. After 12 amazing years that included delivering hundreds of children and caring for innumerable patients, the family relocated to Tucson, where Dr. Grossman would reengage his passion for neurology and spend the balance of his life. Through his over 40 years in service to the people of Tucson and Southern Arizona, he built a medical practice dedicated to family medicine and headache care. His medical career included assignments as Head of Tucson Medical Center's depart of Family Practice and as an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Arizona's College of Medicine. Dr. Grossman's medical career was devoted to making a difference in the lives of his patients. A medical career, together with his family, made for a deeply purposeful life, rich with meaning and devoted to making all around him better. The family would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to the many caregivers who so compassionately served our father and our family through this difficult journey. Your kindness and impact will not be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be directed to Casa de la Luz Foundation, 7740 N. Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85704. Graveside service will be held Friday, October 21, at 12:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.
