Elizabeth Bacal's Obituary
Elizabeth Bacal, 5/7/1908 9/15/2011, Age 103; died September 15, 2011, Born in Chicago to Nathan and Anna Pritikin, immigrants from Russia. She graduated from Chicago Normal College and taught physical education in Chicago public schools prior to her marriage to Harry Bacal (deceased 1963). Elizabeth arrived in Tucson in 1934 with husband Harry Bacal. Together they started Pioneer Paint & Varnish Co., the first paint manufacturer in this part of the southwest. Also predeceased by son, Richard (1951). Survived by daughter, Andrea Bacal (Doug Graves) of San Diego; son Martin (Eva) Bacal of Tucson; grandchildren Lilly (Brian) MacRae of Berkeley, Sam Bacal-Graves of Santa Cruz, Richard (Victoria) Bacal of Tucson, David Bacal (Diana Gayle) of Tucson, Judge Katherine Bacal (David Peterson) of San Diego, Judge Susan Bacal of Tucson, and Emily Bacal of Tucson. Also survived by 9 great grandchildren. Elizabeth served on the boards of many community organizations. She continued her athletic interests and was an avid tennis player for many years. Elizabeth Bacal was a prominent painter and sculptor; many of her works of art are in the homes of numerous Tucsonans, and in other cities as well. Her family members and close friends will miss the annual gatherings at her home during her favorite gathering times of Thanksgiving and Passover.
