Gary Andros
In the early afternoon hours of Wednesday, October 30th, Evelyn Andros White passed away peacefully at the age of 89, surrounded by loving family. Evelyn was born to Eleni and Elias Andrianopoulos on July 2nd, 1935 in Kamari, Arkadia, Greece, and at the age of 21 she came to the Unites States. On July 20th, 1956 she arrived in the USA via Ellis Island on board the SS Queen Frederica. She married her first husband, George Andros, on October 19th in Chicago, Illinois, and gave birth to a son, Gary Andros nearly a year later.
After working for a time at Zenith Electronics manufacturing televisions, she received her cosmetology license. A born entrepreneur, she co-owned a successful beauty salon in the Chicago area for many years, as well as several fruit-produce markets and a restaurant. After the passing of her first and second husbands, she moved to Tucson, Arizona to be close to her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. There she met and married Philip White, and the two of them shared a quiet life together until his passing in 2017. Evelyn continued working as a stylist throughout her time in Tucson, until she retired in 2017. Even post-retirement, she provided services for friends and family at her very own in-home, full-service salon right up until her final months, when she could no longer stand for extended periods.
Though she had lived most of her life in cities, Evelyn never forgot the lessons she had learned growing up in a small village in Greece. She kept chickens in her yard, grew vegetables, and kept a beautiful garden of flowers. She cooked wonderful Greek dishes with a practiced hand that had no use for measuring cups and passed her recipes to her grandchildren (they needed measuring cups). A devout Orthodox Christian, she read about the lives of the saints and attended services until she could no longer make the trip, and even then she watched the services on Greek television. Her life was one of honest work, love and loss, and above all an enduring kindness that never waivered.
She is survived by her son, Gary (Panagiota) Andros; grandchildren George Andros and Antonia Andros; and siblings Taki Andros and Sofia Maroulis. Trisagion prayers and a funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 4th at St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 3939 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ 85718, followed by a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery at 3015 N Oracle Rd
