Gerald Joseph Flynn Jr.'s Obituary
Gerald Joseph (Jerry) Flynn Jr.
Beloved husband, father and brother; cherished son-in-law and uncle
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jerry Flynn on the morning of March 21, 2015. Born June 29, 1944 in New York, Jerry’s family moved to Arizona in 1958 due to his father’s FBI re-assignment to Tucson. After graduation from Salpointe High School, Jerry enlisted in the Navy, serving on the USS Hornet during the Viet Nam conflict. During his service, Jerry endured prolonged exposure to asbestos and Agent Orange, which were ultimately responsible for shortening his life.
After honorable discharge, Jerry began his lifelong career in the automotive industry, working in, managing and owning several related businesses. In 1973, he met and married his wife, Judy and in 1976 they welcomed son, Darren. His Tucson residency was interrupted for two years when he moved to San Francisco to manage an automobile dealership.
Jerry was a devoted volunteer who spent much of his free time with non-profit agencies that exist to improve the quality of life in the Tucson community. He provided leadership and was an active board member for The Boys and Girls Club, The Ronald McDonald House, the Tucson Diaper Bank and the Tucson Parks Foundation, among others. His management style was infectious and he made many lifelong friendships through his volunteer and professional activities.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eileen. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, his son Darren, his brother Kevin and his family. Additionally he is survived by his mother-in-law June, his sister-in-law Suzette, her husband and children.
The Flynn Family wishes to thank the outstanding doctors and excellent caregivers at the Tucson VA who eased Jerry’s final months and supported his family. A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.
