Glenn B. Hicks' Obituary
Glenn Baker Hicks age 62 of Tucson, AZ, died May 31, 2014 at his home of 17 years with his loving wife at his side. He had been battling stage 4 stomach cancer for 6 years. We feel very fortunate that Glenn was alive and fairly well for the majority of that time. He actually took a turn for the worse the beginning of 2014. Glenn was born in Champaign, IL to Barbara and Glenn B Hicks Jr. (Bud). His only sibling is Debbie Jones. Glenn told stories of how Debbie and he would have neighborhood scuffles with other kids on the block. There were the good side and the bad side. I believe it was all done in good fun and they had lots of good times in their childhood. Although, I was told that Glenn teased Debbie much of the time they had a typical sibling rivalry. Glenn graduated from Rincon High, and attended the University of Arizona. Glenn was adored by all his family. He was somewhat of a loner and loved plants at a very young age. He told stories of making an oasis in his back yard with plants and water and he would spend many hours there manipulating the landscape and daydreaming. It was unusual because Glenn's whole families are sports enthusiasts and yet he was not. He loved hiking and trail blazing rather than sports. Glenn was married twice in his life; his first marriage lasted 14 years and broke up amicably. Several years after his split from Gerrie, Glenn met Sally. They fell in love and remained more in love with each passing year. It truly was a marriage made in Heaven. And Sally gives God all the credit. Glenn never had children and he joked that all his children had 4 legs and wagged their tails. After Glenn graduated from the U of A with a B.A in Agriculture he was hired at St Mary's Hospital where he started out as a grounds landscaper and worked his way up to Landscape Manager. He molded and beautified the hospital grounds until 1987. Due to the growth of St Mary's much of the landscaping that Glenn did is gone now but he was very proud of his accomplishments. In 1988 Glenn started his job with the City of Tucson as the city's Horticulturist. He held that position until 1999 when he became a Senior City Planner. I can tell you he much preferred his horticulturist job. Glenn took medical retirement in 2009. Glenn is survived by wife, Sally Hicks, sister and brother-in-law Debbie and Wayne Jones. On his wifes side he is survived by sister- in law Delores Watson and brother-in law Frank Dunaway. Glenn loved his sisters sons, nephews Ben and Chris Jones and their wives Shannon and Chiara and their children, Zachary, Quinton, Dawson and Hutson. He is also survived by niece and nephew Carla and Doug Watson and his wife Kelly and their children, Matthew, Marcus, Justin, Shawn (Carla's), Krista, Bailey, and Addison (Doug's). He also left behind several four legged animals that walk around the house looking lost because he is no longer here. Gregory the fat cat, Lucky the dog (who's lucky we kept him) and Cessa the hunter who never passes up a fresh meal, and I mean fresh as in walking and breathing! Sally speaking; When processing Glenn's illness we talked of many things. One of those things was what his wishes were after his death. He asked me to have a party. So, in honor of his life I will be hosting "A Celebration of Life" party on August 15th, Glenn's birthday. That's a Friday. Please save the date. I have not as of yet (6/5/14) secured a place but the hours will be from 6-10. There will be dinner (catered) and music (live band or DJ). Please, if you knew Glenn or me or just knew Glenn through me please attend his party. I would be honored to have you.
