Harriet Kapsal's Obituary
Harriet Kapsal, 95, our beloved Mother, Yia Yia and Great-Yia Yia, born on September 28, 1919, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 1, 2015. We are saddened that our wonderful Yia Yia is no longer physically with us but also rejoice that she is now in the presence of Almighty God and is reunited with her husband of 40 years, Peter J. Kapsal, who went to be with The Lord in 1986. Harriet was also preceded in death by: her parents, John and Mary Georgacakis; her sister, Angeline Georgacakis; and her brothers: William, George and Frank Georgacakis. She is survived by four children: Ardith Matthews (Paul), Mary Lou Willmington (Edwin), Joyce Kapsal and John Kapsal. She was Yia Yia to five grandchildren who also survive her: Noel Dreher (Byron), Stephanie Snyder, Steven Snyder (Elizabeth), Nicolette Kay (Tim) and Camilla Ferreira (Gus); eleven great-grandchildren; several cousins; and Leon Snyder, the father and grandfather of ten of Harriet's descendants.
Harriet was born and raised in Chicago, IL, by her parents who had immigrated from Greece. Growing up, Harriet worked in her father's restaurant, Queen Anne, in Cicero, IL. She attended J. Sterling Morton High School and Morton Jr. College, both in Cicero, IL, and Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. After college, Harriet worked at the original Sears Roebuck retail store in Chicago, IL. Mom and Dad were married on July 25, 1946, and two years later moved to Tucson where they raised their family. Harriet was a stay-at-home mom for all but 7 years when she worked in the TUSD Payroll Dept. She was also an active member and officer with the Tucson and Northwest Christian Women’s Clubs for many years.
Mom loved God and was an amazing example of godliness, love, faith, caring, strength, compassion, courage, generosity, humbleness, trustworthiness and so much more, as beautifully described in Proverbs 31. She loved her family and we were so blessed to be her children. We love you Yia Yia and you will be dearly missed.
