Irene Gordon's Obituary
Irene Gordon, 95, of Tucson, died early Tuesday morning at the Handmaker Jewish Home for the Aging.
.
A beloved mother and grandmother, Irene moved to Tucson 35 years ago after living many years in North Bergen, New Jersey and in her birthplace, New York City. She had lived at what became known as Fellowship Square for many years and moved to Handmaker two years ago.
Irene was married for 63 years to Harry Gordon, who predeceased her in 2004. They met at a dance when she was 16 years old and never parted except for Harry's Army service in Europe in World War Two. For a while, she followed him to Army bases in Missouri and elsewhere.
She is survived by her sons, Alan (and his wife Elen), Larry (and his wife Leda); grandchildren Matthew,(and his wife Tyanie) and Ellie; great grandchildren Asher and Addie. She is also survived by her dear friend and companion in Florida Jerry Einhorn, and by many other friends and relatives in New York and California.
Irene worked for many years as a fashion saleslady at the famous Lord and Taylor Department store in Manhattan and later at Robinson's and Macy's in Tucson. She was an active member and a vice president of Hadassah in Tucson and had been an active officer at the Sisterhood of Temple Beth-El in New Jersey, where she had lifelong friends.
In her healthier days, she and Harry loved to spend time on the beach, whether San Diego, Santa Monica, Florida or Aruba. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings on Jewish holidays and always welcomed guests to her home for pot roast. And she could still do the jitter bug dance until her 80's. Most of all, Irene was a wonderful person, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who was a loving and constant figure in all our lives.
The Gordon family would like to thank all the employees, nurses and administrators at Handmaker who were so caring to Irene during her difficulties in the past two years. They provided a wonderful final home for her and treated her with so much kindness and support.
