James Russell Veatch Jr., 83, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026. A man of deep intellect, quiet kindness, and enduring passions, James leaves behind a legacy defined by his dedication to learning, his country, and his family.Born on October 23, 1942, in Davenport, Iowa, James grew up with an innate curiosity that guided his lifelong path. He honorably served his country in the United States Army Medical Service, including one dedicated tour of duty in Korea. Following his military service, James pursued higher education with fervor. He earned a Master of Arts in English from Northwest Missouri State University and went on to achieve a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. His immense academic achievements naturally paved the way for a fulfilling, lifelong career as a librarian—a calling that beautifully fostered his profound and lifelong love for books, writers, and language. Highly respected in his field, James was a dedicated member of various library associations. Most notably, he served with distinction as a member of the Depository Library Council to the Public Printer of the United States, helping safeguard public access to critical federal information.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, James possessed a gentle spirit and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He will be warmly remembered for his love of music, his admiration for great writers, and his appreciation for nature. An avid sports enthusiast, he held a deep passion for professional soccer and was an ardent champion of local athletics, frequently cheering in the stands and financially supporting the Tohono O'odham Community College basketball program. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Justine; his brother, Charles Veatch; his sister-in-law, Stephanie Veatch; and his nephew, Charles W. Veatch Jr., along with his wife Katie. He was preceded in death by his parents. His presence will be deeply missed, but his impact on his community, profession, and family will endure.
