Janice Clara Slater's Obituary
Janice Clara Slater, 75, passed away peacefully at home in Tucson, AZ, on December 9, 2024, with her beloved German Shepherd mix, Bailey, sleeping by her side. Born on August 21, 1949, in South Bend, IN, Janice lived a life filled with love, laughter, and generosity.
Janice was the devoted wife of the late Arnold “Duke” Slater. Together, they shared a love for adventure, spending summers riding Duke’s motorcycle, and celebrating special occasions marked by Duke gifting her beautiful jewelry, which she cherished and wore each with pride.
Janice is preceded in death by her husband, Duke Slater; her parents, John Madaras and Margaret Madaras; and her brother, Dennis Madaras. She is survived by her two children, Joseph Day and Sarah Slater, her grandchildren, Jesse Day, Thomas Day, and Nick Day; daughter-in-laws Suzi Day and Deanna Fite, and her lifelong best friend, Jan Burke of Nova Scotia, Canada, with who she's shared over 60 years of memories with.
She was a proud mother to her son and daughter, and a loving grandmother to her three grandsons. Janice’s family was her greatest joy, and she always ensured they had everything they needed, including a lifetime of cherished memories created. She shared a close bond with her daughter and daughter-in-law, who lovingly cared for her in her final years.
Janice had a passion for life’s simple pleasures—family poker nights, visits to local casinos, and watching classic movies or the Game Show Network. A lover of ladybugs, doves, flowers, and beagles, she brought warmth and light to every room with her radiant smile, and sparkling sense of humor. She was also a lifelong fan of Queen, whose music brought her joy, and enjoyed indulging in White Russians or Piña Coladas at family gatherings.
Her heart for animals was boundless, giving many dogs a loving home over the years. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering loyalty, traits that endeared her to family, friends, and even the grocery store employees she befriended during her weekly visits over the years.
A celebration of Janice’s life will be held on January 19, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the home she shared with her daughter and daughter-in-law. All who loved her are welcome to join, and guests are encouraged to bring their favorite photos and memories to share. Perogi, Janice’s favorite, also always welcomed.
Her ashes will be interred alongside her husband’s in the mausoleum at Holy Hope Cemetery at a later date, to be announced by her children.
Janice’s family invites you to honor her memory by cherishing the moments that make life meaningful—lucky hands at the casino, the sight of ladybugs, and the sparkle of baby blue eyes as beautiful as hers.
