Jay I Silverman's Obituary
Jay Silverman, MD, 94, died of natural causes on February 9, 2024. What a mighty fine life! Born across the street from Yankee Stadium, Jay was the only child of Bernard and Rachel Silverman. During the Depression, Jay was raised by his extended family and became an Eagle Scout. After graduation from the Bronx High School of Science and Tufts College, he earned his MD at Albany Medical College with residency in Munsie, IN and fellowship in Chicago, IL. He served in the US Army in France.
In 1963, Jay and his family moved to Tucson AZ where he found plenty of opportunities in cardiology, doctor education, new technologies, clinical outreach and collaborative medical practices. In 1983, he took up the challenge of creating a similar program in Nogales, AZ
He retired to Tucson in 1996 to study at the University of Arizona and volunteer with St Mary's Hospice and Literacy Volunteers. His last years were spent at La Posada CCRC in Green Valley, AZ where he continued his life-long study of history, hiking in Madera Canyon and enjoying his friends, films and gin games!
He was known for his mellifluous voice and elegant aging, his hard work and strength of purpose, and his wonderful sense of adventure!
Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara and infant son, Robert. He is survived by his children Steven Natali (Julie), Eve Kilmer, Andrea Natalie, Bernard Natali (Tobi) and Leigh Farr (Jeff). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his wife, Lindley.
Graveside services will be held at the Or Chadash section of Evergreen Cemetery at 10am, Sunday February 11, 2024. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.
