Joan Buchalter's Obituary
Joan Buchalter, May 21, 1927-February 17, 2015, died peacefully in her apartment surrounded by her daughter, Laurie Buchalter, and her wonderful caregivers. She was a dignified, beautiful and independent woman who was generous to her family and was a talented artist in a variety of media. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and an excellent baker and hostess. She enjoyed bridge, the symphony, ballet and the theater.
Joan was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated Erasmus Hall High School and attended Pratt Institute of Art. She lived 29 years in Rockville Centre, N.Y. and for the last 31 years in Tucson, Arizona. Joan volunteered at Tucson Medical Center in the maternity ward. She served as president of her neighborhood association in the foothills where she and her husband were surrounded by a group of close friends. Joan participated in O.R.T., Hadassah and Brandeis Women and was a member of Congregation Or Chadash.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel and Emma Fass, her son Andrew P. Buchalter, her husband of 63 years, Zachary Buchalter and her cousin, Rebecca Fink. She is remembered with love by her sister Rhoda Goodman,, her daughter Laurie Buchalter, her son-in-law, Larry Kohn, her granddaughters, Rebecca and Shoshana Kohn, her great-grandchildren Hillel, Asher, and Aviyah, her nephews Paul Goodman, Barry (Barbara) Goodman, Don (Judy) Buchalter, Jerry (Rosalie) Buchalter, and the Fink family in Israel.
Services will be held 1 PM, Thursday, February 19, 2015 at EVERGREEN MORTUARY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile. Interment will follow in the Temple Emanu-El section of EVERGREEN CEMETERY. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s name to TMC Hospice or Congregation Or Chadash.
