John W. Johnson Jr.'s Obituary
John W. Johnson Jr., age 70, of Suffolk, Virginia passed away October 16, 2023. He was born May 21, 1953 in Tucson, Arizona to the late John W. Johnson Sr. and Jayne A. Ayres. He was an only child. John's connection to Tucson dates back to the early 1900's when his great grand parents moved the family (John's grandmother and siblings) to Tucson from their cattle ranch near Naco, south of Bisbee.
John enlisted in the Navy in 1976 at the age of 22. He proudly served his country as a Navy Diver for 20 years. His duties as a Hull Maintenance Technician took him overseas aboard ships to various locations around the world as well as stateside. He enjoyed diving immensely. Post Navy, John continued to live in Suffolk Virginia (Norfolk his last assignment) working in the shipyards at Norfolk for military contractors until his retirement in 2020.
His hobbies included surf fishing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and competitive skeet shooting on the Navy’s skeet team. An avid bird hunter, John loved to hunt dove and quail in southern Arizona with family and friends and even traveled to Alaska for a moose hunt with his cousins. For many years John’s Labrador Retriever, Sam, accompanied him on countless waterfowl hunts for duck and geese in Washington state while based near Seattle. John loved the outdoors and all things hunting and fishing.
John will be missed by many friends and especially his family. He is survived by his first cousins Stacy Spendlove, David (Victoria) Manzer, Gene (Mary) Manzer and their families.
Arrangements entrusted to Evergreen Mortuary and Cemetery, 3015 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ 85705.
