Kenneth Dean Meyer, 89, Retired Switchman with Southern Pacific Railroad, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. In heaven, he is reunited with his parents, Roy Meyer and Vera McManis, his brothers Bob and Jim Meyer, sisters Phyllis Brown, Virginia White, and Hazel Cornell, Juanita Lovell, the mother of his five daughters, and his daughter Melanie Alcaraz.
On earth, he is survived by his children; Veronica Hazen (Bob), Michele Meyer Adams (Wes), Denise Meyer and Teresa Meyer-Clemens, granddaughters Jacquelyn Wall (Travis), Kendall Merriman-Stringfield (Chaz), six great-grandchildren, Xander Merriman-Stringfield, Xavien Merriman, Xailen Stringfield, Reagyn Wall, Xahkai Stringfield, and Cade Wall; along with many nieces, nephews, and a close circle of friends.
Ken was born in Wellington, Kansas on May 18, 1933. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served as PFC from 1957–1960. Upon getting his Master’s degree, he taught high school in El Paso, TX and Tucson, AZ. Soon after moving to Tucson in 1966, he left teaching to continue his employment with the Southern Pacific Railroad, until he retired in 1997 after 45 years.
He enjoyed serving his community as a volunteer with Mobile Meals of Tucson and by donating over nine gallons of blood through the American Red Cross. He loved to travel, was a great dancer, enjoyed playing over-60 baseball, spending time with his family and was proud to be a "girl dad". Our dad lived a long, full and happy life and will be missed by all who love him.
A Celebration of Life will take place on May 21, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Dove of Peace Lutheran Church, 665 W. Roller Coaster Road, Tucson, AZ.
