Martin Thomas Mayer's Obituary
Martin Thomas Mayer July 27th, 1940 January 23rd, 2014 Martin Thomas "Marty" Mayer, 73, of Hereford Arizona, passed away last Thursday, January 23rd, 2014 at UMC, Tucson, his loving wife Yvonne at his side. Born in Milwaukee Wisconsin on July 27th, 1940, to Mary Elizabeth and Martin Peter Mayer, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. After completing Peace Corps training in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Marty married Lois Jeanne and began his career in Anthropology at the Museum of New Mexico located in Santa Fe. He joined the National Park Service a year later as an Archeologist, retiring in early 2002 after 39 years of service. During his tenure in the Park Service, he was honored by the Smithsonian Institution as a "Building Doctor," preserving the facilities on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. Marty and Yvonne were married on their Hereford property in 1999, moving there after retirement, where he explored varied interests. He loved southwest culture, gardening, animals, western music, science fiction and railroads. He volunteered five years of time and skill as grant writer for the Cochise County Humane Society, and offering his home and care to dozens of foster and rescue dogs, Chihuahuas in particular. He leaves his wife, Yvonne, two sons from his former spouse, three step-children, three grandchildren with a fourth on the way, and his sister Dorisjean. His parents, sister Clara and step-son Patrick await him on the other side. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Mortuary in Tucson. A future memorial service is to be announced.
