Mary L. Wong's Obituary
On Friday, March 31st, 2023, Mary Frances (Low) Wong, a loving and generous matriarch, connector and unifier of people, peacefully passed away at her home at the age of 98 surrounded by loved ones.
Born on October 31, 1924 in Tucson, AZ to Lee Shee and Sew Ping Low, Mary was the fourth of seven children. From a young age she helped her widowed mother care for her siblings and manage the family store. She spoke Cantonese at home, and Spanish with neighbors and friends in the Barrio Anita, and learned English in elementary school. In June of 1950, she married the first Chinese-American physician in the state of Arizona, Dr. Edward C. Wong, who passed away in 1976.
Marry was extremely proud of her children Edward (wife Yumi Wong), who in 2020 preceded her in death, after serving as a state and county attorney; Elaine, a Dean at Brandeis University (husband Peter Schlossberg); her grandsons Erik and Ethan Wong and Jason Schlossberg;and great granddaughter Sutton Schlossberg. Mary volunteered extensively in the community and participated in church activities and several bowling, quilting, mahjong, and charitable organizations. She was an active fan of professional and Pac 12 sports teams, especially the U of A. Mary was also known for her collections of toys, Christmas ornaments, and demitasse cups. A world traveler, she visited countries and states across four continents.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Loy, John, Sunny, and Joe Low, older Sister Sui Kum Chan and survived by her younger sister Somei Tong and an extended family of cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews too long to list.
