Morley David Glicken's Obituary
Dr. Morley D. Glicken (April 13, 1940 – August 21, 2024), a long-time resident of Tucson, passed away after a short illness.
Dr. Glicken grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the child of parents who immigrated from Eastern Europe shortly after World War I. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with degrees in Social Work and Psychology, obtained a Master of Social Work from the University of Washington, and earned a Doctor of Social Work and Master of Public Administration at the University of Utah.
Dr. Glicken was a tenured teaching faculty member at several schools of social work, including the University of Kansas and the University of Alabama. He was the founding director of the MSW Program at California State University, San Bernardino, and was the Dean of the Worden School of Social Service in San Antonio. Dr. Glicken was well known in Tucson for his work as the Executive Director of Jewish Family Services and as a faculty member in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University.
Dr. Glicken was the author of 21 published books on a variety of subjects related to evidence-based practice, research, men’s issues, and the strengths perspective. He published over 50 articles in professional journals and wrote extensively on diversity in the workplace, burnout, and personnel issues for the Wall Street Journal.
A lifelong tennis player, history buff, and film aficionado, Dr. Glicken had a gift for finding the best coffee shops in any town and making friends wherever he went. He loved a good mystery novel, enjoyed traveling the world, and found joy in spending time with his daughter and grandsons.
Dr. Glicken is preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Sam Glicken, and his sister, Gladys Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Glicken; son-in-law, Brian Gerl; grandsons, Miles and Liam; brother, Harold; and nieces and nephews, Rosalie, Faivel, Chaim, and Rochel.
