Rafael Efren Rodriguez's Obituary
Rafael (Ray) Rodriguez
86 yrs. Tucson, Az

Ray spent his childhood on the family farm in Mameyes, Puerto Rico. He came to the states at the age of twelve to advance his education at the Cheshire Academy in Connecticut. Upon his high school graduation, he began his college career at the University of Florida, ultimately earning his Doctorate in Animal Genetics in 1974. With a deep understanding of genetics, he was instrumental in the introduction of the Nelore cattle breed to the US. Nelore are known for their hardiness, with many traits that allow them to adapt to various southwestern environments. Leveraging these characteristics, his herds displayed major advancements in weight, disease resistance, and fertility, contributing to his growing reputation in the cattle industry. All of this work was driven by his lifelong love of animals. From a young age, he raised small pets in his home, later breeding and showing champion Dobermans and horses, culminating with his ultimate passion, cattle. He was well respected by his peers and recognized by the Carter administration for his efforts. Ray took great pleasure in sharing his knowledge mentoring young and old. The only criteria was a desire to learn.
Ray is survived by his four children, Quita (Bill), Lori (Martin), Pete (Monica), Joaqui (Lisa). With twelve grandchildren: Josh, Jade (Josh), Jared (Eva), Jordan, Dahlia (Chad), Khole (Jennifer), Hannah (Lucas), Chance (Destiny) , Candida (Robert) , Adriana, Elliott, and Isaac ,nine great-grandchildren: Zaiden, Rachel, Orion, Zachary, Bryce, Drew, Colton, Avery, Maisy, he relished his role of wise patriarch and opened his heart to be the Godfather to many. During his lifetime, he traveled many places, while gathering an extended family that knew no borders. From the "Jivaritos" of Puerto Rico, hardworking cowboys, to his many "compadres", his best times were spent in the dusty corrals reviewing his 4-legged children- as evidenced by the plethora of photos he would proudly share.
Even though Ray would always consider himself "A lover, not a fighter", he endured many calamities during his life and survived by hard work and sheer willpower. He was very competitive, but fair. He did not believe in letting anyone just win. His motto "No Mercy" underscored his belief that working hard and truly earning accolades was most satisfying and productive. He was always there to share his home and comforts with any in need. Through this he instilled a strong work ethic and compassionate heart in all of his "tribe". Ray's life could sometimes be tumultuous, and he greatly desired to find peace and enjoy his final years in the company of his family and many friends. For this, a heartfelt thank you and gratitude to Carla for her companionship and support in giving our father the happiness and peace he treasured.
