Richard Eugene Thomas' Obituary
Richard Eugene Thomas, affectionately known as "Rich," was born on April 1, 1956, in Dayton, OH, but called Tucson, AZ home. Rich passed away on October 8th, after a long and valiant battle with cancer, surrounded by his children, and loving wife, Carol.
Carol was by Rich’s side every step of the way through his battle over the last year and a half, as she was in life. The two were inseparable, perfectly complimenting the other in a way few are blessed enough to experience. Together they built a home and life with boundless love, laughs, and joyful memories.
The consummate athlete and sports fanatic, Rich was distinguished as the 5th best football player in Flowing Wells history, graduating in 1974. His prestigious sports career continued as one of the most dominant fast-pitch softball pitchers in Tucson, transitioning to coaching his cherished daughter, Melanie, and later his granddaughter, Sydney - touching so many young lives along the way. His son Jeff, and now grandson, Devon, have followed in “Coach Rich’s” footsteps.
Rich had a unique gift for turning friends into family, establishing deep, heartfelt connections with everyone he met with his sincere and genuine nature - making one feel as if they were the most important person in the room. Rich's love, warmth, and laughter will forever live on in the hearts and memories of all who had the honor of knowing him.
Rich is survived by his daughter Melanie Hestekin and son-in-law Mick, son Jeff Thomas and daughter-in-law Melissa; cherished grandchildren Jeffrey McPeek, Devon McPeek, Sydney Hestekin, Chayten Flamand, and Aiden Thomas; great-grandchildren Audrina and Ryder McPeek; sister, Bernetta and Brother in Law Dave Bowles; and his McGillicuddy in-laws, with whom he shared numerous memorable moments — from camping adventures to festive holiday gatherings in Casa Grande.
A service to celebrate and honor Rich’s vibrant life and enduring spirit will be held on Saturday, October 14th at 10 am at Evergreen Mortuary. Friends and family are invited to come together, reminisce, and share stories that honor his impactful presence and indelible imprint on their lives.
