Rudy Michael Mathews' Obituary
In Loving Memory of Rudy Mathews
Rudy Mathews, a devoted husband, father, and cherished friend, passed away on 12/30/2024 in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 84. Known for his remarkable spirit, unwavering dedication, and love for family, sports, and adventure, Rudy’s life was an inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him.
Born in Nacogdoches, TX to Opal and Herbert Mathews, and raised in Orange, TX, Rudy’s love for football led him to Texas Christian University, where his play at offensive tackle led to All-Southwest Conference honors in 1962 and being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, a highlight of his life and a testament to his hard work and passion for the game.
After his football career, Rudy transitioned into the insurance industry. This led to stints in Colorado and San Francisco, finally settling in Tucson to build a distinguished career with Mueller and Associates and later CREST Insurance. He was known for his professionalism, integrity, and the genuine care he brought to his work and clients. He also had a knack at running pools; his annual Arizona football and college bowl pools were much loved by work colleagues, friends and family.
A devoted fan (and occasional critic) of the University of Arizona football team, Rudy and his wonderful group of friends and family put on amazing tailgate parties before every home game for the past 30+ years and built deep and lasting friendships.
Rudy is preceded in death by his wife Maria Mathews, his spouse since 1985. He is survived by children Tye Mathews and wife Tanya, Stefanie Fernandez and husband Christian, Julie Curry and husband Mark, stepchildren Barbara Rowland and husband Shane, Brian Chinnock and wife Karin, and Kevin Chinnock and wife Michelle. He was a proud Boompa to Jackie Curry, Nicholas Curry, Haley Mathews, Calvin Walther, Austin Rosecrans, Bennett Rosecrans, Sebastian Fernandez, Conor Rowland, Sean Rowland, Michael Kern, Tyler Decker, Colin Chinnock, Megan Peasha, and Brendan Chinnock, and brother Glenn and wife Karon. His family was the center of his world and because of his generosity in putting together yearly Mission Beach trips, generations of children and grandchildren got to build bonds that will last the rest of their lives.
Memorial service will be at St. Alban's Episcopal Church on January 27th at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Rudy asked memorials be directed to St. Alban's Memorial Fund, 3738 Old Sabino Canyon Road, Tucson AZ 85750, or Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, 352 E. 25th St., Tucson AZ 85713.
