Sally S. Julian's Obituary
SSally Sue (Tomchin) Julian, born June 11, 1929 passed away peacefully on May 22, 2021 in Tucson, Arizona. She was the child of Eastern European Russian immigrants, and grew up in the small mountain town of Princeton, West Virginia. At age 14 she moved to New York City, but at heart, she was always a West Virginia gal. From this background, she excelled at academics and graduated from the University of Chicago in two years and then continued at Columbia University for her masters in Sociology and Hofstra University for a degree in elementary education. Always a life-long learner, she returned to school at the University of Arizona, and at 47 graduated with a master’s in library science. She then became a librarian at Reynold’s Elementary School for 17 years. Nothing gave her more joy than imparting her love of books to children.
Sally met her husband, Charles, in the Catskills, working a summer job in the General Store, and he, as an entertainer in the Borscht Circuit. They had four children, Peggy Langert (Rick), Andrew Julian, Emily Hall (Mike) & Martha Mann (Jonathan), seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Her children and grandchildren were all blessed to have inherited her love of learning and reading. She taught her grandchildren to read, and if they ever needed help in any subject, from math to history to English all the way through high school, she was the expert, always happy to help.
Nothing was more precious or important to her than intellectual endeavors and she found great joy in filling her retirement schedule with classes of all kinds; her favorites being history, economics, philosophy, and Torah study. Her curiosity about the world was insatiable right until the very end. Whether in a tent, trailer, cruise ship or plane, she loved traveling the world with her husband and children.
