Sam Cohen's Obituary
Sam Cohen was born in Chicago, IL, on November 8th, 1919 and passed peacefully at the age of 97 on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Sam was the eldest of three sons, born to Greek/Turkish immigrants Rachel and Isaac Cohen.
Sam grew up in Chicago and joined the Army Air Force when the U.S. entered World War II. He served with distinction in the Army Air Force as a radio operator on a C47 flying the Burma-China-India “hump”. Last year, he had the honor of traveling to Washington DC with the Honor Flight of Tucson and was accompanied by his grandson, Geoff Mackey. It was the trip of a lifetime and a wonderful memorial for his past wartime service to his country.
Sam was married for 62 years to Jean Capsuto, raising three daughters and one son together. They moved the family to Tucson, Arizona in 1965. After a long career, he retired from the then Hughes Aircraft Corp. He and his wife were active in various community organizations over the years, were members of Temple Emanu-El and participated in the Sephardic Club,
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Capsuto Cohen, who passed away in 2008. It is only fitting that Sam passed away on his beloved wife's birthday. He is survived by his four children, Shelley Bowen (Jerry), Lenore Mackey, Denise Coffey, and Mark Cohen, and his brother, Albert Caren. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and was adored by his six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He also leaves an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Family was the most important thing to Sam and he worked hard to provide for them.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful caretakers and staff at Brookdale Ventana Senior Living, and Sam's many friends there who made his last years so fullfilling. Thank you also to the Sunlife Home Care caretakers, and TMC Hospice who brought him much peace and serenity in his final days.
A memorial service will be held at Evergreen Mortuary, 3015 North Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ on Monday, December 12th at 1:00 p.m.
