Samuel George Arcus' Obituary
Samuel George Arcus
Our beloved father and grandfather, Samuel George Arcus, passed away in his sleep at the age of 95 on January 5, 2017. Sam led a remarkable life, always striving to improve the lives of others. After growing up in an orphanage, he graduated from City College of New York and earned a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University. Throughout his career, Sam was dedicated to his work at Jewish Community Centers. Upon retirement at age 65, Sam proceeded with equal devotion to a second career with the Pima Council on Aging.
In 1946, Sam married Adele Rosenthal in New York, and they had 57 wonderful years together. Sadly, in 2003, Adele passed away, although their love story lived on and inspired many others. Sam is survived by his son Norman (Susan) Arcus, and daughter Shelley (George) Ting.
Grandchildren include Sara Arcus; Megan (Chris), Peter, and Amy Ting.
A private service was held on January 6th. Sam’s kindness and humor will always be remembered. He was a compassionate and generous person. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Pima Council on Aging, Tucson Jewish Community Center, Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging or the Arizona Humane Society.
