Sherry Marmorstein's Obituary
Sherry Marmorstein, age 82, left this world on November 22, 2024. Beautiful, brainy and fun, she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Sherry was born September 13, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Lincoln High School before marrying the love of her life, Joel Marmorstein, at age 19.
Sherry had two children. She was a loving and involved stay-at-home-mom who played games, planned outings, threw fun birthday parties, baked cookies and cupcakes, sewed costumes for school plays, and read bedtime stories every night.
Sherry resumed her education in her 30’s, when she enrolled at the College of Staten Island. An ambitious student, she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.
Sherry worked as a laboratory technician at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center on Staten Island before becoming a Research Scientist in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn NY. Sherry worked at Downstate for 24 years, and was acknowledged in articles in The Journal of Biological Chemistry and The American Association for Anatomy Journal.
Sherry was very creative; she put a lot of effort into decorating her homes, and she was always busy with crafts like sewing, knitting, crochet and needlepoint. She especially enjoyed creating Afghans and baby blankets. She loved fashion and makeup, and always made an effort to look “put together.” Sherry loved games of all kinds and was an avid lifelong Mahjong player. Another passion was travel; Sherry and Joel visited at least 53 countries together.
After retiring, Sherry lived the snowbird lifestyle, summering in New Jersey and wintering at the Sunflower community in Tucson. She became a year-round Arizona resident when she moved to Saddlebrooke in 2016. She made the most of the social activities at the communities she lived in. She liked to host parties and club meetings. She also enjoyed chatting with her neighbors while taking a dip in the pool.
Sherry was preceded in death by her father Aaron Kaplan and her mother Esther Levy. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joel Marmorstein; her sister Linda; her daughter Stacy Alynn Hiemstra, and her husband Dirk Hiemstra; her son Alan Marmorstein, and his wife Lihua Marmorstein; and her granddaughters, Jade Marmorstein and Jessica Marmorstein.
Her funeral was held November 27, 2024 at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson.
