Shirley Sue Myers' Obituary
Shirley Sue (Pike) Myers was born in Bowling Green, Ohio on February 13, 1936. She was the only child of Leonard A. Pike and Marjorie E. (Strong) Pike. From an early age, Shirley loved horses. Some of her happiest memories were riding horses with her Dad.
After graduating from high school, she attended college to become a dental hygienist. One day she went out on a double date to the movies. During the intermission, her date went to get refreshments and took the gal from the other couple with him. While they were gone, the other gentleman asked if he could take her on a date. She agreed. Three months later, Shirley married that gentleman, George “Skip” Myers on September 1, 1956. Together they would have three children, Douglas E. Myers, Elizabeth A. Myers-Hustedde (Stephen) and James L. Myers. Shirley is survived by her children and three grandchildren, Steven Myers, Jonathon Myers and George J. Myers and one great grandson, Jacob and a great granddaughter, Gwen, to be born sometime in early December 2019. Shirley is also survived by her cousin, Betty Lou (Hull) Smith and her children, Steve Smith and Kim (Smith) Lane.
Shirley loved her children actively participating in their lives and school activities. In the early years, she loved being a stay at home mom attending to her home, garden, children, animals and as an active member of her church. She was an excellent seamstress sewing clothes and many a costume for church festivities.
While serving with the church Alter Guild, Shirley had the opportunity to minister to shut ins and widows. She would spend an hour or more with each one allowing one or more of her children to see Christ in action.
As her children grew up, Shirley had a career as a veterinary assistant and as a dental office receptionist. Everywhere Shirley went she made lifelong friends because she knew the importance of relationships.
In 1996, Shirley and Skip moved to Show Low where they developed 10 acres of undeveloped property into a small ranch where she could care for senior citizen horses and live a quiet life. Skip often called the horses “expensive lawn ornaments” but loved the horses as much as Shirley did. She loved the mountains and the simple life that they had created together.
In 2008, due to growing health concerns, Shirley and Skip returned to Tucson and their home they owned since October 1960. They quickly found a fulfilling life in Tucson among their longtime friends and family. In 2013, Shirley was diagnosed with lung cancer and in 2014 became a cancer survivor.
Shortly, thereafter, Shirley developed dementia that prevented her from doing all the activities that she enjoyed doing. Shirley spent several hours every day with her daughter-in-law, Linda Myers, who provided her with opportunities to be in the community and to eat a healthy dose of ice cream!
Shirley was a very special one-of-a kind wife, mom, grandparent, pet guardian and an amazing woman and will be greatly missed.
