Virginia “Ginger” L. Apalategui
August 17th, 1948-May 6th, 2026
Virginia L. Apalategui passed away peacefully surrounded by the love from her family on May 6th, 2026. She was born on August 17th, 1948, in Sandusky, Ohio. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Harold J. and Marjorie L. Smith; daughter, Tracy L. Walker; husband, Joe A. Apalategui; and sister, Roberta O’Neal.
Virginia was dedicated to making a home full of love, laughter, and traditions. She spent her career helping children with a variety of disabilities to be successful in their school environments. She was known for her spontaneity and imagination when it came to playing with any children that entered her home. She was an avid collector of turtles and enjoyed watching a good U of A game. She touched many lives of family, friends and people in her community. She was best known for her witty humor and her spicy personality.
Virginia is survived by her sister, Barbara Krause; daughters, Diane Walker (Paula), Donna Lawson(the late ,Mark), Melanie Arvayo (Miguel), Kathryn Apalategui; stepchildren, Doreen Sanchez (Gilbert), Joseph Apalategui Jr (Rachel), Michelle Apalategui-Montiel(Robert); grandchildren, Sydney, Sean Jr., Parker, Lauren, Larisah, Brianna, Marcus, Josh, Michael, Gilbert Jr., Joseph III, Jordan, Ramon and Alexi; many nieces and nephews. Virginia will be deeply missed but will forever be remembered for her warmth, generosity, amazing spirit, and unwavering strength.
