It was January of 1979 - we newlyweds arrived in Greenville with all of our worldly possessions and $75. Russell was transferring to BJU that semester. We drove by an Econolodge on Wade Hampton and I was ready to pull in (wasn't feeling well). But R wanted to drive by the school so we kept going. Further down WHB was a little motel. We pulled in but were told they didn't have a room. R started chatting with the man behind the desk; told him we were here for school. Dan McCandless pulled out a welcome card from his church, then called the Econolodge and got us a room. As we entered our room the phone was ringing - Dan and Sharon invited us to breakfast the next day. After breakfast he took Russell for a haircut and she took me to find housing. I remember being in awe (and so thankful) at the way they took us in and smoothed our path. Imagine Dan and Russell meeting in heaven!
Again, Dan McCandless, thank you for being that kind of friend to strangers. And Sharon McCandless, thank you for being the kind of wife who he could count on to take folks in.
