Daniel "Dan" Lee McCandless' Obituary
Daniel "Dan" Lee McCandless went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 3, 2019. He was born in Greeley, Colorado on October 22, 1941. Dan was the son of Charles and Wildon McCandless. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his eldest son Scott. Dan is survived by his wife Sharon, with whom he had just celebrated 54 years of marriage on August 2, 2019. He is survived by daughter Shelley Calhoun (Jon); his sons Tony (Tina) and Daniel; and seven grandchildren. Dan is also survived by his brothers David and Tim (Peggy), his sister Deanna Stemler, and many nieces and nephews.
Out of high school Dan joined the United Sates Air Force serving our country four years as a Flight Simulator Specialist during the Vietnam War. Dan and his wife Sharon were married in 1965 while he was still in the Air Force. After being honorably discharged from the service, he went into the electrical field as an electrician. He was an electrician for many years before being called into the ministry to serve the Lord. Dan had accepted Christ at the age of 7 being led to the Lord by his Sunday School Teacher. He was devoted to serving the Lord and seeing others come to know Christ as their personal savior. He was called into the ministry at age 33 to attend Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. As he tells it, “he crammed four years into eight” at Bob Jones University to earn his BA degree in Bible Studies. He received his certificate of ordination into the ministry in June of 1980. While attending Bob Jones, he pastored a church before being called to the mission field where he has faithfully served for the past thirty years with the Native American communities in Arizona.
Despite his failing health in the past twenty years due to his bouts with different types of cancer, he always continued to think about his mission field and was right back on the field as soon as he was able. His desire was to witness to everyone who cared for his medical needs; even in his last hours he witnessed to the hospice nurse caring for him. Dan was known for his quick sense of humor which kept everyone around him smiling and on their toes, doctors and nurses included.
Dan will be greatly missed by his wife Sharon, family, and dear friends- but they rejoice that one day they will once again be reunited with him in Heaven. 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
