Irene, Gerard and Steve,

I am writing to extend how sorry and sad the family of Mary Gilmore is to learn of George's death. We all have great memories of George and your family growing up next door to you in Sioux Falls. Mom loved working for George at Nervig Travel and was thrilled by the opportunities her job afforded her to also leave her footprints on many countries as well. She considered George and Irene as her lifelong and treasured friends. She was deeply saddened by the news of his death.

Mom has lost contact information for Irene and would greatly appreciate if Irene could call her at 1-605-563-2003. We all will remember George's humor and his kindness. Heaven is richer and we are sorry you have lost someone so special.

My condolences to Irene, Gerard and Steve on the death of your husband and father.

My memories of your family are from the 1950s and our neighborhood on S. Summit Avenue in Sioux Falls. Our neighbors to the north were the Emmels, to the south the Nervigs. I think there were at least a half dozen sons among those families and ours before the first girl (me) came along. I still have the lovely pink voile dotted swiss dress with hand smocking that Irene made for me, and my first pair of baby shoes she brought from France. (They lace and tie at the back of the heel.) Mom saved these special items for me, and my daughter and her daughter also wore them. I remember George as a gentle giant; in my memories he was taller than the other dads. I remember the kindness, patience and generosity of our neighbors. We moved to Dell Rapids in January of 1958 when my folks, Norma and Virgil Smith, bought the weekly newspaper here. Dad has been gone 21 years; Mom died this past October, just shy of her 98th birthday.

It's been nearly 60 years, but I want you to know that George and his family have been fondly remembered.

I remember George and Irene visiting my parents, Ray and Mary Loftesness, back in the 1950s...I'd sit on the stairs and eavesdrop as George talked about travel in Europe and I vowed I'd go someday. And I did, many times. Thank you, George, for the inspiration. To the Nervig family: my sympathy and wishes that all your memories be good ones!

Dear Irene, Gerard and Steve,

He did leave more that just footprints in this world. He left us with many warm and happy memories from his sharing his wisdom, kindness, humor and caring with us all.
