Joseph Bernard "Joey" Lopez's Obituary
Joseph Bernard “Joey” Lopez, 65, passed away on January 24, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona, the city where he was born and spent his life.
Born on May 9, 1960, in Tucson, Joseph—affectionately known as Joey—was a joyful soul with a good heart and an unforgettable personality. He grew up with a developmental disability but never let that define or limit him. From an early age, he demonstrated resilience and determination that would become hallmarks of his life.
Joey is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Rachel Lopez (Alex), Rosanna Hugo, Armando Lopez (Judy), Marcia Calkin, Mario Lopez, Gerard Lopez, Marisa Lopez, Christina Lopez, Martin Lopez, and Anissa Lopez. He was preceded in death by his father Richard D. Lopez; mother Alicia Lopez; sister Anna Marie Munoz; and brother Richard G. Lopez.
Joey attended Gump School, part of Duffy Elementary, as well as Urquides and Howenstine Education Center. His educational journey laid the foundation for a strong work ethic that carried him through decades of employment across various industries. His first job was at Eric’s Ice Cream in the early 1980s. He later worked making adobe bricks in Marana and held positions at El Conquistador Hilton Resort and La Posada Green Valley Senior Living. His final role was with Jim Click Nissan for 10 years, where he proudly declared himself the number one sprayer in the detailing department—a title he wore with pride until health challenges made it impossible for him to continue working.
Despite those challenges, Joey defied expectations time and again. Though doctors recommended hospice care on more than one occasion, he beat the odds and gifted his loved ones six more years filled with laughter, stories, and love.
Joey had an adventurous spirit and a zest for life. He traveled extensively to places like New York, Las Vegas, Colorado, Canada, New Mexico, and even embarked on a Disney Cruise to Alaska. He also enjoyed countless camping trips that brought him closer to nature and those around him.
He was an avid fan of Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and he loved watching shows like Walker, Texas Ranger, MacGyver, and Star Trek. Bowling was one of his greatest joys—so much so that he competed in the Special Olympics—and it remained a cherished part of his life. His dog Koda, lovingly nicknamed Lalo, was his guardian angel and healing companion, never leaving his side and faithfully keeping watch over Christina.
Known for his outgoing personality and playful sense of humor, Joey was a character in every sense of the word—a prankster with countless stories from his youth who brought joy to those around him.
May Joseph Bernard “Joey” Lopez’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life lived with courage, humor, and heart.
