Michael Shih's Obituary
Dr. Michael Fung Shun Shih was born on April 15, 1933 in Taipei, Taiwan to Song Sung Shih and Shin Paw Chow. He was the eldest of 7 siblings. Michael attended National Taiwan University, before working at a Japanese company for 2 years. Subsequently, he was offered an Assistant Teaching scholarship to come to the United States. His hard work earned him a Master’s Degree at the University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
Michael married Ling Tsan after a beautiful courtship that included many love letters. Highlights of their marriage of 53 years include their two children, Alan and Carol, and travels around the globe. Michael settled his family in Midland, Michigan to work at Dow Chemical Company for over 10 years. He later opened his own personal computer business, Computronix. Michael enjoyed cruises to the Carribean, numerous national parks, especially the Canadian Rockies, and was amazed with the beautiful landscapes and varied cultures of the many different countries he explored.
Michael’s passions included computers, investments, and architecture. He designed and built his family home in Michigan, as well as a dream retirement home in Arizona. He moved to the foothills of Tucson in 2011 to enjoy warmer weather, and to be closer to his children, Alan Shih (Zie) and Carol Chen (Theodore) and their families. Michael was quietly content around the commotion of his grandchildren, Zachary, Tyler, Landon, Darren, and Kyla. He enjoyed classical music and opera, reading, gardening, and a good Peking duck meal.
Michael Shih relinquished life peacefully on September 26, 2023, with his wife lovingly by his side. His family will hold a small, private service for close family in his honor. He will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, AZ. Michael’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved his gentle smile and kind nature.
