We have lost a beacon of hope and a brigh
t shining light in the world. It is very sad news. We are all sad. We lost a friend, a confidont, a role model, and a mentor. The Black and the Krieg Family lost a wife, daughter, niece, cousin, a soul mate, a partner, a lover, one part of a dynamic duo and partnership, and the faith, hope, and love of a beautiful and talented young woman. I am truly, truly sorry for your loss. My care and concern for you and your loss is genuine and sincere. If there is anything that I can do, please do not hesitate. Please let me do whatever I can do, even if it is just to lend a listening ear to listen. I have genuine care and concern for others. She was kind, caring, thoughtful, and generous. She loved her guide dog, she loved music and was constantly writing and singing music, she liked to go on walks, she liked to play board games, she loved to cook and bake, she loved to swim, and she loved to challenge herself and others to live life to the fullest. She was a very good Grade I and II Braille reader and writer. I met her when I was a student at the Colorado Center for the Blind in Littleton, Colorado at the age of 19 in the Summer Training and Employment Program in 2001. I finished high school and attended the Colorado Center for the Blind's Adult Independence and Training Program from June, 2002 to December, 2002. She was once again a student and we were in some of the same classes. The Colorado Center for the Blind taught her and me: confidence, competence, self-esteem, how to take charge of our lives with confidence and self-reliance, how to use the long, white cane, how to read and write Braille, how to use a computer with adaptive technology, home management skills, and organizational skills. We are grieving and in a state of mourning. To tell you the truth, I think many of us are sad, shocked, and stunned. We feel this way, for we lost our friend at such a young age. We still do not fully know the cause of her death. This was such a sudden and tragic death. We honor her life and memory. I honor the life and memory of my friend. I honor her adaptability, flexibility, courage, bravery, her kindness, her compassion, her empathy, and her spirit as a fierce and loyal friend. Look to the Light. The Light Is Strong. The Light Is An Offering and An Invitation to Come Along. Trust in the Light. Rachel was and is that lantern of light and hope that surrounds and sustains us. Hope: We pick it up, hold it, and put it down. Rachel was one of those people that could and did hold the hope for us when we could not hold that hope or the hope for ourselves. It was an honor and a privilege to get to meet and know this excellent and extraordinary young woman.
