Dear Sandra, Martin, Allison, Hartley and family,
We were saddened to learn of Sid's passing. Last time we saw him, a few years ago in Jerusalem, he looked vibrant and healthy, enjoying life, travels, family.
We fondly remember our years together in Mesa, Arizona, during which time Sid served as President of the synagogue.
One memory that is especially vivid was when Martin wrote a Purim play, in which the king mentions that Esther had a "cute tush." It pushed the buttons of one of the congregants that such slang was allowed in a synagogue play, and he raised a ruckus. Sid, in his calm and judicious manner, suggested to the irate parishioner that he might find more decorum at the neighboring synagogue. Case closed.
We will always remember the quiet and unassuming way in which he led the congregation with foresight during some difficult moves. He was always present in a caring and capable way. He brought his Canadian sense of humor into the community, a most welcome addition. He was a gentleman. His intelligence and sense of humor were appreciated.
He was so proud of all his family. We share in your sorrow. May you be comforted and may Sid's memory always bless each one of you.

We were also members of Temple Beth Shalom of Mesa AZ, having arrived in 1981 from Toronto, Canada. We became friends of the Lachters, socializing after services at the shul as well as in one another's homes. I remember how Sid would tell me that his name was NOT Sidney, but Sid and I insisted on calling Sidney just to get his goat. He took it all in good graces, with that famous smile on his face.
A few years ago Sid & Sandy came to Israel, so, of course we had to get together. I remember it took as such a long time to find the street where they were renting an apartment. But we finally got there & had a lovely reunion with them, having not been in contact for over 20 years.
It was evident to all how much he loved his family, his parents, Sandra, his lovely wife, and business partner in the t-shirt business, and of course, his 3 children; truly a FAMILY MAN.
we will miss you, Sidney, oops, I mean Sid.
